Zyban is indicated as an aid to smoking cessation treatment.

How Taken Zyban

Swallow Zyban whole. Do not crush or chew them or the sustained activity of the drug will be destroyed and the chances of side effects occurring may be increased. Take as directed, usually twice daily for 7 to 12 weeks. Do not take more or less medication than prescribed. Since this drug can cause sleeplessness at first, it is best not to take near bedtime. It is advised to continue smoking for the first week after starting this drug, until it reaches higher levels in your blood. Do not smoke if using any nicotine products with this drug. Too much nicotine can cause serious side effects. Do not stop taking Zyban without notifying your doctor.

Zyban Warnings/Precautions

Do not take Zyban if you have taken a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) in the last 14 days. Zyban is in the FDA pregnancy category B. This means that it is not expected to be harmful to an unborn baby. Do not take Zyban without first talking to your doctor if you are pregnant or could become pregnant during treatment. It is not known whether Zyban will be harmful to a nursing baby. Do not take Zyban without first talking to your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.

Zyban Missed Dose

Take any missed Zyban dose as soon as possible but not if it is within 8 hours of the next dose. If it is time for the next Zyban dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular schedule. Do not "double-up" the Zyban dose.

Zyban Possible Side Effects

Zyban is generally well tolerated. Dry mouth, headache, increased sweating, nausea/vomiting, constipation, anxiety, fatigue and blurred vision may occur. If these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor. Report: unusual weight loss or gain, palpitations, agitation, trouble sleeping. Unlikely but report promptly: tremor, dizziness, fainting, mood changes, slowed movements, difficulty urinating, decreased sex drive, drowsiness. Very unlikely but report promptly: seizures, mental problems, fever, muscle aches, yellowing of the eyes or skin. Notify your doctor immediately if an allergic reaction to this drug occurs. Symptoms include: difficulty breathing, rash, itching. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

Zyban Storage

Store Zyban at room temperature, out of direct sunlight. Keep Zyban in a tightly closed container. Keep Zyban out of the reach of children.

Zyban Overdose

Seek emergency medical attention if an overdose is suspected. Symptoms of a Zyban overdose include seizures, hallucinations, loss of consciousness, weakness, a fast heartbeat, and heart attack.

Avoid alcohol or drink it only in moderation while taking Zyban. Alcohol may increase the risk of having a seizure while taking Zyban. However, if you usually drink a lot of alcohol, talk with your doctor before stopping. Suddenly stopping may increase the risk of having a seizure. Talk to your doctor about alcohol use before starting treatment with Zyban. Use caution when driving, operating machinery, or performing other hazardous activities. Zyban may cause dizziness or drowsiness. If you experience dizziness or drowsiness, avoid these activities.
