Dovonex
Generic Name: calcipotriene
Calcipotriol is a nonsteroidal antipsoriatic agent, derived from the naturally occurring vitamin D. Calcipotriol exhibits a vitamin D-like effect by competing for the 1,25 (OH)2D3 receptor. Calcipotriol is as potent as 1,25 (OH)2D3, the naturally occurring active form of vitamin D, in regulating cell proliferation and cell differentiation, but much less active than 1,25 (OH)2D3 in its effect on calcium metabolism. Calcipotriol induces differentiation and suppresses proliferation (without any evidence of a cytotoxic effect) of keratinocytes, thus reversing the abnormal keratinocyte changes in psoriasis. The therapeutic goal envisaged with calcipotriol is thus a normalization of epidermal growth.

Dovonex Uses
Dovonex Cream is indicated for the treatment of plaque psoriasis.
How Taken Dovonex
This medication is usually applied twice daily (in the morning and evening) to the affected areas of the skin. If needed, it may be applied once daily for maintenance treatment. Once an appropriate improvement has occurred, treatment may be stopped. When used in combination with other psoriasis medications, it is usually applied once daily, at a different time of day than the other medication. It is important to use this medication exactly as prescribed by your doctor.
The maximum weekly adult dose for the cream or ointment is 100 g (5 mg of calcipotriol). Maximum doses for children are calculated based on body surface area and age. When the cream, ointment, or scalp solution are used together, the weekly maximum dose is based on the total amount of calcipotriol in each product, for a maximum weekly dose of 5 mg calcipotriol for adults.
